Description
Singapore, a modern community, was not built in a single day, but after years of hardship and labour of our elders。Singaporeans today are reaping the bountiful fruits of their labour and they should not repay them with disregard and disrespect。In a rapidly ageing society, some Singaporeans today view the elderly as a burden。Some of the elderly now either live separately from their family or are left in the care of nursing homes or hospice。Many of them never get visited by their relatives or family at all, they feel neglected and extremely disappointed, as the children they have raised do not even show care and concern。For most of us, holding our elders in high regard and showing them affection come naturally。As the Chinese saying goes, one generation plants the trees under whose shade future generations rest On 23 May 1994, then Nominated Member of Parliament Associate Professor Walter Woon moved a private member's bill which was eventually passed by Singapore Parliament on 2 November 1995 as the Maintenance of Parents Act (奉养父母法案) in Singapore。The Maintenance of Parents Act (MPA) provides for Singapore residents aged 60 years old and above, who are unable to subsist on their own, to claim maintenance from their children who are capable of supporting him but are not doing so。Parents can sue their children for maintenance, in the form of monthly allowances or a lump-sum payment。Relatives or caregivers may apply for court action on a parent's behalf, with the parent's consent。The Act also establishes the Tribunal for the Maintenance of Parents to decide on applications made under the Act。On 23 November 2010 Singapore Parliament has passed amendments to MPA with a slew of enforcement mechanisms to make children provide for their aged parents。More importantly, the government has to step up building more facilities (such as more elder-friendly) for the elderly, old and infirm and developing more comprehensive advanced medical services required by an ageing society。Our society should always have affection, care, compassion and respect for the aged。
