Ectopia cordis is a very rare congenital abnormality with the heart formed out side the body. The chest wall and sternum are not formed. The treatment option is surgery to put the heart back in to the chest cage. Its covered by some plastic shield for a period of 6 months. After six months, chest wall and sternum are reconstructed with ribs of the same child. The success rate is about 50% and if good, the child can lead a normal life but without much hard core running and jumping stuff.
